How to Tune Your EXOTON S-1803 via the RS-485 NETWORK Port
Share
Fine-tune your S-1803 or S-1803W for your room, event setup, or preferred sound profile with the built-in RS-485 NETWORK port. This guide explains how to connect to the speaker, access the control software, and make conservative DSP adjustments safely.
Important: The S-1803 is factory-tuned for its intended performance. Use this process for small refinements only. We recommend adjusting only the EQ curves and crossover point; leave other parameters unchanged unless EXOTON Support has instructed you otherwise.
Before You Start
You will need:
- A Windows PC
- The supplied RS-485 connection cable and USB-to-RS-485 adapter (
- The USB-to-RS-485 driver (included on the supplied disc or Download USB-to-RS-485 driver), if your PC does not recognize the adapter automatically)
- The S-1803 RS-485 speaker debug software, downloaded and extracted to your PC (Download the S-1803/S-1803W Debugging Software)
- A powered-on S-1803 or S-1803W with a stable power connection
Compatibility note: Do not load a DSP preset or program file made for a different model or hardware version. S-1803 V1 and V2 use different programs, so their files are not interchangeable.

Step 1: Install the USB-to-RS-485 Driver
Install the USB-to-RS-485 driver before connecting to the speaker. It is included on the supplied disc. Some computers already support the adapter; if your system recognizes it and the software shows a USB serial port, no extra installation is required.
Step 2: Connect the Speaker and Open the Software
- Connect the supplied cable to the NETWORK port on the rear panel of the speaker.
- Connect the other end to the RS-485 adapter box, then plug the adapter's USB connector into your Windows PC.
- Confirm that every connector is fully seated.
- Turn on the speaker, then open the RS-485 speaker debug software.
Keep the speaker powered and the cable connected throughout the session. Never unplug the connection while the software is saving data to the speaker.
Step 3: Confirm That the Software Sees Your Speaker
On the Quick Scan page, wait for the Serial Port field to show USB Serial Port (COMx) and confirm the green SERIAL CONNECTED status.
Select DEVICE DISCOVERY. During the search, the button may change to STOP DISCOVERY. When OK CONNECTED appears, select START CONTROL in the lower-right corner to enter the speaker control interface. Do not select DEMO.
On the HOME page, a green status dot in the upper-left corner of the Speaker control card confirms that the PC is still connected.
Step 4: Back Up Your Current Settings
Before changing anything, save or export the current DSP settings. This gives you a clean way to return to the original factory tuning if a change does not suit your system.
If you receive a shared DSP preset file, place the file in an easy-to-find location such as the root of a local drive or a top-level folder. This can help the software locate and import it correctly.
Please note: A DSP file can contain all four DSP presets. Importing it can replace the settings assigned to all four DSP modes, not just the current mode.
Step 5: Make Small, Intentional Adjustments
For most setups, limit changes to:
- EQ curves - to make small corrections for the room, placement, or source material
- Crossover point - when integrating the S-1803 with additional compatible audio equipment
Keep EQ changes within +/-6 dB. Large or extreme boosts can place unnecessary stress on the speaker and may cause damage. Make one small change at a time, listen at a sensible level, then decide whether another adjustment is actually needed.
Step 6: Loading or Storing a Supplied Program File (Only When Needed)
If EXOTON Support has supplied a specific program file for your speaker, use the following process:
- From the Speaker control card, select MENU, then LOAD/SAVE.
- Select the folder containing the supplied program file with the ... button.
- Select the instructed file (for example,
S-1803-new2608, if this is the file provided for your unit). - Select Load and wait for the process to finish.
- Confirm the correct file remains selected, choose Store, and wait until Store Finish! appears.
Do not close the software, turn off the speaker, or disconnect the cable during Load or Store. A program file is not a general-purpose EQ preset; use it only when the file was provided for your exact speaker version.
Quick Troubleshooting
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| No device under Serial Port | Confirm the driver is installed, the speaker is powered on, and the USB connection is secure. Select Refresh; reconnect the USB cable and restart the software if needed. |
OK CONNECTED does not appear |
Verify SERIAL CONNECTED first, then run DEVICE DISCOVERY again. Check both the NETWORK and USB connections. |
| The program or preset is not listed | Select ... again and choose the correct folder. Confirm that the file is intended for your exact S-1803/S-1803W version. |
Store Finish! does not appear |
Keep the speaker powered and connected. Re-select the correct file and try Store again. If it still fails, contact EXOTON Support. |
